Fabian Lengusuranga: Meet William Ruto’s Lethal ADC from Elite KDF Special Forces

When President William Ruto took over from Uhuru Kenyatta, he inherited the latter’s aide de camp Timothy Lekolool.

Kenyans grew fond of the towering brigadier from Samburu, with many pleading with Ruto to retain him.

However, the president had other plans and soon replaced Lekolool with Fabian Lengusuranga, a highly trained army officer.

While a section of Kenyans poked fun at Lengusuranga because of his height, he is arguably more lethal than Lekolool, as he is a Green Beret.

The paratrooper belongs to the KDF Special Forces, the equivalent of America’s Seals or Rangers.

Little is known about the Gilgil-based unit, which is among the KDF’s crème de la crème, and rising to the rank of colonel is no walk in the park.

The unit, whose motto is ‘only for the special breed of men’, was first made public after KDF soldiers went to Somalia in 2011. Nation reports that the squad was the first to set foot in Kismayu and less than 50 of them secured the landing for other soldiers.

The highly trained and well-equipped soldiers were also deployed during the 2013 Westgate siege.

Special Forces get their recruits from the navy, air force and army, with only those under 27 years of age and a mean of C+ in KCSE being accepted.

The volunteers undergo a two-year training program after the nine-week basic combat training.

Lengusuranga’s unit enjoys better pay than its peers and undergoes specialised training in Israel, the United States and other countries.

The Special Forces, who often parachute from planes and rappel from helicopters, are among the few units in the world to have the FN SCAR rifle, a high-tech weapon manufactured in Belgium for the US.

Their training is so rigorous that all women recruits drop out, and only a quarter of all those who sign up make it through.

In 2020, the US splurged KSh 527 million on training the elite unit at various US army bases and elite military colleges.

With all this in mind, Lengusuranga is a lethal operative, even though his duties as ADC don’t include protecting Ruto.

Elsewhere, TUKO.co.ke reported that Ruto inherited Pepita Ranka, a highly trained officer in charge of the president’s security.

On Friday, September 16, when the president flew in a Kenya Air Force helicopter to Naivasha for the Kenya Kwanza parliamentary group meeting, Ranka was already on the ground for surveillance.

In typical fashion, Ranka had a fake arm allowing his actual hand, presumably holding a firearm, to react quickly to threats against the president.
