Berlin / Dhaka (dpa / d.de) – Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has congratulated Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus on being sworn in as head of the interim government in Bangladesh. The 84-year-old inventor of microloans is to govern the country until new elections can be held. In inventing microloans, Yunus earned himself a reputation as the banker of the poor. He provided microloans to enable people to start their own business and help themselves out of poverty. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for this in 2006 – by which time the system of microloans had already become established in more than 100 countries.
Following weeks of unrest and after the authoritarian prime minister Sheikh Hasina had fled, the European Union also welcomed the interim government. According to a statement by EU High Representative Josep Borrell, it has the important task of paving the way for democratic elections.
