Lisbon (d.de/dpa) – Portugal and Germany want to continue cooperating closely in the battle against climate change. At a meeting with Prime Minister António Costa in Lisbon, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz praised Portugal for being a “pioneer” in the expansion of wind and solar power and the production of hydrogen. He said that the two countries were cooperating closely on the planned construction of a hydrogen pipeline. The pipeline, which will run from Barcelona and Marseille via the Mediterranean Sea, is to connect Spain, Portugal and France to the rest of the European grid from 2030. Costa described Germany as an “important ally” when it comes to creating a “green corridor for renewable energies”.
Germany and Portugal intend to continue to pull together on military support for Ukraine. German Chancellor Scholz called the joint provision of Leopard-2 battle tanks to the country, which is under attack from Russia, a “visible sign” of the good cooperation between the two countries. Portugal’s Prime Minister Costa said that his country was ready to continue its military support for Ukraine together with Germany “within the bounds of our possibilities”.
