Berlin (d.de) – Following the ousting of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad, Germany is stepping up its commitment to a stable and peaceful Syria. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Economics Minister Robert Habeck have stressed Germany’s responsibility in terms of supporting reconstruction and humanitarian assistance.
In a video statement on X, Scholz expressed optimism about the changes in Syria: “After 54 years of inhumane dictatorship, the people in Syria at last have a hope of freedom.” The chancellor emphasised that stability was only possible if all groups were taken into account: “Syria is home to many ethnic and religious groups. There will only be stability and security if there is space for all these groups in the new Syria.”
Looking ahead to the future, Scholz added: “After all the suffering, all Syrians deserve a life in freedom and security. Ensuring this is the most important task for the new rulers. We will work together with them on this basis.”
German Economics Minister Robert Habeck also stressed Germany’s commitment to humanitarian assistance: “The German government and foreign minister will work together with our international partners to do everything they can to contribute to stabilisation and reconciliation, to humanitarian assistance and reconstruction.” He also drew attention to the difficult situation. “The humanitarian situation, especially for children, is disastrous.”
On Wednesday, the German government made eight million euros available at short notice for emergency humanitarian assistance in order to ease the acute situation.
