Berlin (dpa) – The Federal Government has offered its support in view of the severe flooding in Spain. “We are in direct contact with the Spanish government to find out if support services from Germany are needed to deal with this horrible disaster,” explained government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit in Berlin.
“If we are able to help with our experienced disaster relief workers and salvage experts from the Technical Relief Service, we will,” said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. Such aid could be coordinated via the established EU Civil Protection Mechanism “to ensure that exactly the type of support needed is provided swiftly,” she added. “Our thoughts, sympathy and solidarity are with our Spanish friends. Europe stands united in this time of need.”
Following heavy rainfall, at least 95 people lost their lives due to flash flooding in the Mediterranean region of Valencia alone. Hebestreit emphasised that Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the Federal Government are “deeply shocked”.
