Gladys Chania: Kiambu Politician Linked to Husband’s Death Has over 3 Fraud Counts in Court

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives are working around the clock to unravel the gruesome murder of 58-year-old businessman George Mwangi.

Mwangi’s body was found dumped in the Kieni forest in Gatundu North, wrapped in a black polythene bag and placed under a heap of cartons.

The astute businessman with an interest in real estate was killed on October 10. The following day, his wife, Gladys Chania, was arrested as the prime suspect in the murder plot.

On Monday, October 17, a Kiambu court allowed police to detain Chania for seven more days to complete the investigation into the murder.

Chania charged with fraud

Unlike Mwangi, who not much is known about him, Chania, who unsuccessfully vied for the Kiambu woman representative seat, is not new to controversy.

The prominent counselling psychologist who appeared on national television numerous times is battling several fraud cases in courts, especially in Thika and Kiambu.

To highlight them, Chania was in Kiambu Law Courts on September 29, where she is facing a fraud case number MCCR/1283/2018, Nation reported.

At Thika Law Courts, the lady was charged with defrauding two people, Eric Gathogo and Martin Mwangi, KSh 400,000 by promising them she was in a position to facilitate them to travel to the United States for greener pastures.

The premise never materialised even after the two parted with the cash.

In another case, the Salvation Army Church in Thika is seeking KSh 3.5 million from Chania’s organisation, Right at Home Rehabilitation Centre. The case will be heard in November.

Love triangle

Detectives gathered that Mwangi was killed following a love affair involving him and his mistress, identified as Lucy Muthoni, a secretary at a local school.

According to DCI, Mwangi fell in love with Muthoni, who was looking for a rental house sometime in 2021.

He offered her one of his rental houses next to his house and one thing led to another and he would be spotted together at local joints and other social gatherings.

Some of the family members intimated to detectives that the deceased had introduced Lucy to his family as his second wife, and she was well known to the extended family.

On the fateful day of the murder, Lucy had accompanied the deceased to a family function in Kimunyu, where the main suspect was also in attendance. She left the function earlier.
