Joshua Wong Sentenced to 10 Years for Foreign Collusion, Faces International Backlash
On Thursday, a Hong Kong court sentenced pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong to ten years in prison for charges of foreign collusion, a ruling that has drawn widespread condemnation from international lawmakers, activists, and human rights organizations who argue it undermines fundamental human rights.

Wong, aged 30, is one of the most recognizable figures associated with the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, which has been heavily suppressed. He was one of 45 opposition politicians and activists convicted of “conspiracy to commit subversion” under the National Security Law enacted in 2020. Wong had previously pleaded guilty to charges related to endangering national security in collaboration with foreign entities.
During the sentencing, Judge Tam Yiu-ho characterized the crime as a “serious offense,” noting that the standard sentence for such charges begins at 13 years but was reduced to 10 years due to Wong’s guilty plea.
Prior to this latest ruling, Wong was serving a sentence of four years and eight months for the subversion charge. His new sentence means he won’t be eligible for release until 2036, when he will be 40 years old.

Chinese democracy activist Wang Dan criticized the ruling, calling it “utterly shameless.” Living in exile in the United States, Wang stated, “This persecution highlights the regime’s insecurity and brutality.” He emphasized that Wong’s advocacy for Hong Kong’s freedom should not be considered criminal, arguing that the true criminals are those in power.
International Reaction to the Sentencing
Phil Robertson, director of Asia Human Rights and Labour Advocates, asserted that Wong’s actions were fundamentally non-criminal. He commented on the irony of a country like China, known for its transnational repression, punishing Wong for seeking international support against such actions.
U.S. Representative John Moolenaar labeled Wong a hero, asserting that he only pleaded guilty due to the Chinese Communist Party’s systematic erosion of judicial independence in Hong Kong. Moolenaar stated that the ruling reflects a blatant disregard for universal human rights.

“Joshua and Hong Kong need the international community’s support now more than ever,” Moolenaar added, urging for Wong’s immediate release and reunion with his family.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council also condemned the Hong Kong authorities, asserting that the recent sentencing represents a continued infringement of human rights under the guise of national security. They highlighted Wong’s prolonged detention of over 2,000 days since 2020 as politically motivated.
Details of the Charges
The convictions against Wong include allegations that he conspired with Nathan Law, another prominent pro-democracy figure now in exile, to solicit foreign governments to impose sanctions on Hong Kong and China. The judge determined that Wong’s actions had garnered significant international attention, dismissing the defense claims of limited involvement as unpersuasive.
The defense previously argued for a shorter sentence, emphasizing Wong’s youth and the delay in prosecution. The court, however, maintained that the gravity of the charges warranted the ten-year sentence.

Steve Li Kwai-Wah from the Hong Kong Police stated that the sentence underscores the significance of the actions leading to Wong’s conviction. He called for Nathan Law to return to Hong Kong and surrender.
While the Hong Kong authorities have insisted that their law enforcement actions are based solely on evidence and legal frameworks, critics argue that the National Security Law serves to undermine freedoms and perpetuate a crackdown on dissent.
Wang remarked that the harshness of Wong’s sentence reflects the Chinese government’s disregard for human rights. He stated, “This decision reveals the CCP’s true nature, demonstrating a regime that opposes universal values and freedom.” He called Wong a hero whose sacrifices should not be forgotten.
