With February 1 marking the Lunar New Year a new study from food delivery service Chef’s Plate indicates that Chinese is Canada’s most popular international cuisine.
Chef’s Plate, formerly a Canadian company purchased by HelloFresh in 2019, used Google search data to determine which cuisine Canadians prefer the most.
The cuisines were searched as ‘topics’ as opposed to ‘search terms’ because Google includes words that share the same concept in any language in its topics.
Turns out the top choice is Chinese food.
“Analysis of Google Search data by Canadian meal kit service Chefs Plate, most Canadians are searching for Chinese cuisine above other international foods,” states a news release from Chef’s Plate.
The top five cuisines in Canada, as of January 6, 2022, are Chinese, followed by Thai, Indian, Italian and Korean.
A graph released by Chef’s Plate charts the rise in popularity of Chinese food over the past 17 years, and
in the past five years, Chinese food has consistently been at the top of online searches for international cuisines.
The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the new year according to the traditional Chinese calendar and it is widely known as a time to honour ancestors and to feast alongside family. This year is the year of the Tiger.
