Police in Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido are looking into possible safety lapses after a 2-year-old boy was killed in a go-kart accident.
The accident happened on Sunday at a motor sports event for children in Mori Town.
A go-kart driven by a child veered off course and crashed into children waiting in line.
Three young boys were rushed to a hospital. One of them, 2-year-old Yoshida Sena from Hakodate City, was unconscious and in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
The event was organized by a car dealership.
Children had been driving karts on a temporarily built course.
Organizers say the vehicles could reach speeds of around 40 kilometers per hour, which is faster than those of usual go-karts at amusement parks.
Police have so far found no problems with the go-kart involved in the accident, such as brake malfunction. But no buffers had been placed along the course where the children were hit. Police are looking into the possibility of professional negligence in the case.
