Hope for Unemployed Teachers as TSC Begins Talks to Fulfill Kenya Kwanza’s Promise

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has said that it has commenced consultations on teachers’ recruitment in line with the Kenya Kwanza education charter.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 5, during celebrations to mark World Teachers’ Day at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said that teachers should expect good news.

TSC to embrace CBC recommendations

Macharia also said that the commission is committed to fully complying with the outcome of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) review undertaken by a 42-member task force.

She said that the commission had already started addressing the issue of teacher deficit in the country.

According to Macharia, already 14,000 teachers have been posted to deal with the deficit, and she disclosed that talks with the Office of the President are ongoing to secure the welfare of teachers.

“I urge all teachers and officials of teachers’ unions and associations to make sure that our education sector remains on the right trajectory. The commission is ready to fully comply with the CBC recommendations,” she said.

During the celebrations, union heads called for improving teachers’ welfare countrywide. Critical issues raised are the deficit in the labour force and the reluctance of teachers to live in regions they see as insecure.

In his own words, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) secretary general Akello Misori said:

“We want TSC to lobby for the employment of the 58,000 new teachers the new administration promised to give us. We also need the Kenya Kwanza government to prioritise teachers in its Housing Scheme so that we fhelpful inl to this great nation.”

If it comes to pass, the recruitment would be in line with President William Ruto’s campaign promise that, if elected, his government would employ 116,000 teachers in two years to bridge the current shortage in public schools.

TUKO.co.ke understands that it would be the largest recruitment of teachers ever and would push the number of teachers on the government payroll to 400,000.

TSC awards deserving teachers

During the event, several teachers were awarded for their role in improving students in institutions’ performance in national examinations and spearheading community service initiatives.

On Sunday, October 2, Ruto said that his administration would revisit CBC to put an end to the rising complaints.

Ruto said a thorough assessment would be done on the CBC to see how it can be implemented without burdening children, teachers, and parents.

Speaking in Homa Bay, the president assured that CBC would be examined to reduce the curriculum’s workload.
