Prices for most of the big streaming apps available in Australia have risen over time, reflecting their often huge debts and the cost of constantly creating and buying large quantities of movies and TV shows for your entertainment.
If you haven’t paid attention to how much you’re being charged here’s a summary below:
Netflix
Watch Netflix on your smartphone, tablet, Smart TV, laptop or streaming device, all for one fixed monthly fee. Plans range from $10.99 (SD), $16.99 (HD) to $22.99 (4K) per month. No discounts for paying a year in advance.
If you’re looking to cut costs the $16.99 HD plan is best, it allows 2 simultaneous streams and 2 offline download devices.
STAN
Stan has three subscription plans available for you to choose from. In addition, Stan has introduced an add-on Sport package which will be available for $10 a month on top of your base subscription plan. No discounts for paying a year in advance.
Monthly pricing is $10 (SD), $14 (HD) or $19 (4K). STAN Sport (HD/4K) is a $10 a month add onto your base subscription.
The sweet spot for cost cutters is the $14 HD plan that allows 3 Simultaneous streams and 3 Offline download devices.
Foxtel Now
With no installation required of a satellite dish or cable connection, Foxtel Now is a simpler way to get access to Foxtel’s great content that doesn’t need a set-top-box with a satellite or cable connection, just an internet connection with a compatible device.
The cost varies greatly from $25-$104/month depending on the mix of channel packs you choose. There are sometimes specials eg: at the time of writing this sentence you could get every single pack for $49/month on a 12 month contract. Every subscription option includes access for 5 streaming devices.
If you need to cut your Foxtel costs, note that a while ago Foxtel realised a lot of people weren’t interested in it’s channel based service so they broke up their content and launched streaming apps Binge (drama/lifestyle), Kayo (Sport), Flash (News) that people could subscribe to separately at various pricing tiers depending on the number of simultaneous streams etc.
Amazon Prime Video
Amazon charges Australians a lot less for their streaming service than USA customers so lucky us (for now). Amazon Prime (which includes Amazon Prime Video HD & 4K) costs Aussies either $6.99/month or $59/year (equivalent of $4.92/month) if you prepay.
Amazon Prime Video includes Amazon Originals as well as popular movies and TV shows. Prime membership also includes free shipping on eligible Amazon items and other benefits.
Disney+
With entertainment from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star, there’s always something exciting to watch on Disney+.
You can watch the latest releases, original series and movies as well as classic films for $11.99 per month or $119.99 annually (prepaid 10 months for price of 12).
Paramount+
Paramount+ Australia is a smaller streaming service that has flagship content of every Soccer match played in the A-league, Socceroos, Matildas and FA Cup live as well as being the home of Star Trek and having a small but growing content catalogue of movies and TV shows.
A Paramount+ subscription costs $8.99 per month with an annual subscription option for $89.99 (equal to $7.49 per month). There are cheaper options if you’re an A League team season pass member, contact your team for a discount code/link.
Britbox
Britbox Australia is another smaller service run by BBC/ITV and therefore streams some TV shows made by those two British TV networks.
What’s on offer it’s largely British dramas (mainly police/mystery) and classic comedies, with a sprinkling of other shows all of which aim to appeal to viewers who are in the age range of low 40’s to retirement age.
The price is $8.99/month or $89.99/year prepaid (get about 2 months free).
