BUDAPEST – Hungary Releases Communist-Era Secret Police Files
On Wednesday, Hungary took a significant step towards transparency by disclosing files from the communist-era secret police. This initiative, championed by Prime Minister Peter Magyar, identifies tens of thousands of former informants as part of a long-overdue examination of the nation’s oppressive history.
Since the country’s transition to democracy in 1990, attempts to unveil the archives from the communist regime have faced numerous obstacles. Critics have pointed to a recurring hesitance among successive governments to expose well-known figures from various political backgrounds.
Following his April election victory over the long-serving nationalist leader Viktor Orban, Magyar has actively pursued reforms, including a new bill introduced in September. This legislation aims to provide the public with unrestricted access to these historical records for the very first time.
