The former Bulgarian king Simeon II was a fourth cousin of Elizabeth’s father, King George VI
The former Prime Minister of Bulgaria Simeon of Saxe-Coburg sent a letter of condolence to His Majesty King Charles III on the occasion of the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II:
“Your Majesty, dear Charles,
I am completely devastated. We hoped that your beloved mother would continue to serve as an example to us all forever.
The universal sorrow we are witnessing proves that no one in history has had such a positive influence on so many people. Her faith and unwavering sense of duty over three generations is extraordinary!
I will always be grateful for Her inspiring example of a Monarch who served her people till her last day! A guiding light that irrevocably and confidently led in the right direction.

Simeon of Saxe-Coburg and Queen Elizabeth II are representatives of the Saxe-Coburg-Goth dynasty, which was the most powerful aristocratic family in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Simeon of Saxe-Coburg was a fourth cousin of Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, who reigned from 1936 to 1952.
In Britain, the dynasty is called the Windsors, the name change being a result of anti-German sentiment during the First World War.
Two of the brothers of the Bulgarian Prince Alexander Battenberg are married to a daughter and a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. They take the surname Mountbatten. From this family on the mother’s side is Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who died just over a year ago.
