A British influencer has shared her favourite part about moving to California from the UK, and why she doesn’t plan to move back until she has children.
Katie Timmins, who has been sharing her move to Los Angeles along with her fiancé Sam and their dog Benji, explained in a recent TikTok video why she doesn’t have any regrets about the big decision to her 61,500 followers.
“Both Sam and I have professional careers, we’re both employed by US employers”, she explained. “Our wages more than doubled when we moved to California.
“Even with the heavy price of rent, and the heavy cost of living in California, we still have more money left over at the end of the month than we could ever dream of having in the UK.”
Katie, who works in financial technology, and her partner, who is a quantity surveyor in the construction industry, are able to pay off the mortgage on their UK property and still live comfortably due to their jobs in the US.
On top of this undeniable advantage, Katie also shared that she felt professionally fulfilled due to the mindset of people around her.
“The opportunity in the US is the most unbelievable thing,” she said. “Everybody is so ambitious and so positive when it comes to achieving your life goals and getting what you want out of life, which we love.”
The weather has also been a big factor in Katie’s satisfaction with her life in the US. After years of waking up and going home in the dark in the UK, the TikToker shared that “waking up to that beatiful sunshine everyday is unmatched”.
Despite this, Katie and her family do plan on returning to the UK one day.
“As it currently stands, if i had children in the US, I wouldn’t put them to school here,” she shared. “Which would mean once we have our children and their reach school age, we will be moving back to the UK.
“I get a lot comments that it isn’t all about the money, of course it isn’t. But if I want to set up a future for our children and ourselves to be comfortable, unfortunately, that is what it boils down to.”
“I think people see my videos and think I dislike the UK”, she added. “I love the UK, we’ve kept our home in the UK, and we will one day be back in the UK, so please don’t think I dislike it, i love it. it’s where all my family and friends live, it’s where i started my career. I love home, and i still refer to the UK as home.
“But for the time being, the US offers us more than anywhere else in the world.”
