George Dobson bagged his first Charlton goal in some style during Saturday’s win at Rotherham – but the midfielder warned supporters not to expect him to now morph into the next Frank Lampard.
The 24-year-old’s superb long-range drive proved decisive at the New York Stadium on Saturday. He was making his 34th league appearance for the club when opening his Addicks account but Dobson admitted he’s not too concerned about his goal tally.
“I’m not that bothered about the goals,” said the former Sunderland man.
“I’m not really that far up the pitch that much. I’m always trying to protect the back three, back five. I’m not going to say I’m going to turn into a Frank Lampard, but it would be nice to have a couple a season.
“To be fair, I don’t have many shots. I am normally one a season and we’re getting late on now. The boys were saying: ‘any danger of you getting a goal?’ It was perfect to get it today and a 1-0 win against a team that’s up there where we want to be next season.
“Delighted. Albie [Morgan] has played it across and it’s just one of those where it’s come across the body and you’re thinking ‘just get it on target.’ I struck it cleanly and there’s no better feeling than seeing it nestle into the back of the net.”
The South Londoners upset the odds to take all three points off the high-flying Millers and extend their unbeaten run on the road to three.
“The game plan worked perfectly,” added Dobson, whose last goal came for AFC Wimbledon at home to Wigan in March of last year.
“With Conor [Washington] on the counter-attack and Jayden [Stockley’s] aerial threat, they’re always going to create chances. We had a lot more times where we could have probably got in, when it went to 1-0 especially where the counter-attack was working so well.
“That should give us great confidence. We’ve had to the two red cads in the last two games but the application and effort of everyone in the last six, as well as the result, have been good. We’ve just got to keep doing this in the last few games and take it into next season.”
