Jim Ovia Ventures into Luxury Property Development at 74
At the age of 74, Jim Ovia is far from considering retirement. The seasoned entrepreneur is now setting his sights on the dynamic arena of premium real estate development, transitioning from the stable foundations of banking to the ambitious realm of constructing luxury properties.
Building a New Legacy
After a distinguished career in banking, where he significantly influenced the sector, Ovia is keen to establish a new legacy in real estate. Having recently stepped down as chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, he is channeling his efforts into Quantum Luxury Properties Ltd., which is spearheading two upscale residential projects poised to transform the property landscape in Lagos.
High-End Developments on the Horizon
The first of these projects, Metropolitan Towers, is a striking 26-story building that features apartments starting at a price point of $1.85 million. Equally ambitious is Quantum Luxury Towers, which consists of 44 exclusive residential units priced from $2.8 million. Ovia has reported a remarkable level of interest in both developments, with initial sales figures indicating a positive reception from the market.
Profitability Shift: Real Estate vs. Banking
Ovia has articulated a shift in his investment philosophy, asserting that real estate is emerging as a more lucrative venture compared to banking. This perspective reflects his commitment to leveraging emerging opportunities in the luxury property sector.
Lagos: The Epicenter of Luxury Real Estate
Lagos continues to be an attractive market for luxury real estate, boasting a concentration of wealth, corporate leaders, and global investors. Despite ongoing challenges such as inflation and the depreciation of the naira, the demand for high-end residential properties remains robust, drawing investors eager for premium locations and substantial long-term returns.
A Tale of Contrasts in the Housing Market
While Nigeria faces a staggering housing deficit of over 20 million units, the luxury real estate segment persists in commanding high prices, catering to a limited yet economically powerful clientele. This juxtaposition highlights the unique dynamics within Nigeria’s property market.
