The New York Knicks have solidified themselves as one of the teams that will be battling for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Tom Thibodeau made some changes to the rotation in early December, and they have paid major dividends as they have been one of the best teams in the NBA over that span.
Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson have played at an All-Star level, and when healthy, RJ Barrett has proven to be a very good third option. However, even when playing at their best, this roster doesn’t look like it is championship caliber.
There is certainly nothing wrong with that, as being a playoff contender is a nice improvement for a Knicks team that went 37-45 last season. But, if they want to push into that next tier of the league, they will have to make a splash sooner than later.
Could Zach LaVine of the Chicago Bulls be that splash? Chicago has had a rough 2022-23 season as they have come to a crossroads on whether to rebuild the team or push forward. When healthy, the Bulls have shown that they can be a top team in the Eastern Conference, but good health has been fleeting.

If the Bulls opt to go the rebuilding route, the Knicks could make for a natural trade partner. Bobby Marks of ESPN discussed why the Bulls could have an interest in making a deal with New York.
If the Bulls really want to pivot, how about Zach LaVine to New York for a package of draft picks, young players and contracts? Unlikely but as we mentioned above, the Bulls have a decision to either stay the course or look for deals involving their core players.
The Knicks certainly can build a strong trade package. Obi Toppin, Immanuel Quickley, Quentin Grimes, and Cam Reddish are all high-upside young players. They have as many draft picks as anyone in the NBA beyond the Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz, who underwent rebuilds recently.
But, an argument could be made that LaVine isn’t the player for the Knicks to target. He would be a huge boost offensively, but the injuries are a major concern long-term. Also, his fit in the lineup would be an awkward one as Barrett or Grimes would have to move to the bench and LaVine leaves a lot to be desired defensively.

LaVine is a very good player but he doesn’t raise the ceiling of this Knicks squad. Unless he was acquired at a steep discount in a salary dump by Chicago, New York should look elsewhere to make a blockbuster.
