Laura Peel’s Olympic journey ends before even stepping onto snow at 2026 Milano Cortina Games

Sport is not fair.

Nobody ever said that it was.

But it must feel especially so for Laura Peel, finally ruled out of these Games as a result of a training injury after 10 days of anxious waiting.

No doubt one of Australia’s greatest ever aerialists — the numbers and achievements tell us that.

A 15-time World Cup winner. A two-time world champion. Three-time winner of the overall crystal globe for the best aerialist for any given season.

But the crushing, irrefutable truth is that, for the vast majority of Australians, however unreasonable or — dare one say — unfair it is to say, those achievements and accolades pale into insignificance when laid bare against the one thing she has not achieved in her career: Olympic gold.

Now she must wonder if she’ll ever get the chance again.

Aerials has been Australia’s most successful event at Winter Olympics, with athletes winning a total of five medals.

Chef de mission Alisa Camplin-Warner and Lydia Lassila — both in Livigno to see this aerials campaign — lead the way with a gold and bronze medal each.

So many would have hoped, maybe even expected that Peel would join them on the dais this time around.

Three times Peel has finished inside the top 10 at Olympics from her three appearances thus far.

But now, instead of seeing Peel’s beaming smile and the unmistakable glint of gold in her hand as the lasting impression of her Olympic career, it will instead be the tragic glittering of frozen tears on the Secret Garden mountainside in Zhangjiiakou.

Peel went into those 2022 Games as favourite, her famed triples simply unmatched in women’s aerial skiing.

But tough, freezing conditions and a momentary lapse in a discipline that demands nothing other than perfection, saw her slip to fifth, her Olympic dreams ending in a puff of snow as she failed to land cleanly.

Peel’s brave stoicism in addressing the press after that disappointment, temperatures plunging to 30 degrees below zero, freezing her pain into diamonds of despair on her cheeks, was heart-wrenching to bear witness to.

Now those same tears have taken place in private as one of Australia’s greatest ever dealt with the knowledge that a rupture to her right ACL at a pre-games training camp in Airolo, Switzerland, just days before the opening ceremony would undoubtedly end her Olympic dream.

“I’m heartbroken my Olympic dream has come to an end in this way,” Peel said in a statement.

“I put everything into this campaign, and never imagined I wouldn’t make it to the start gate.

“I’m grateful for all the support I have received from the medical and support teams, we have worked so hard to try and change this outcome, but unfortunately it’s not meant to be.”

Had the 2026 Games taken place 12 months ago, Peel would have come in as an even bigger favourite.

She won five World Cup gold medals out of a possible seven on the circuit, including gold in Livigno at the Olympic test event.

Read more about the Winter Olympics:

Her back-Full-Full-Full, the highest difficulty leap on the women’s circuit, was a thing of such remarkable beauty that it never failed to elicit a gasp of delight from those watching.

The Canberran was untouchable.

But she irrefutably found things harder this year, the landings more elusive, the flight unsteady, the form that made her the 2024/25 World Cup phenomenon as fleeting as a flurry of snow.

Perhaps it was that uncertainty that saw her damage her knee in training.

Perhaps it was the pressure of knowing that, aged 36 and the senior member of the Australian team, this could be her last chance of Olympic success.

The last chance she had to ink herself into the books as an Aussie legend in the eyes of an Australian sporting public that demands Olympic gold as validation of greatness.

The Australian team will now be led by four-time Olympian Danielle Scott and debutants Abbey Willcox, Airleigh Frigo and Reilly Flanagan.

Australia has also enacted the Late Athlete Replacement Policy for an as-yet unnamed stand-in.

But Peel will never get that chance, this tangled sport’s final, cruellest twist, the fairytale gone spectacularly south.

That’s what’s most unfair about Peel’s fate.

But nobody ever said sport was fair.
