Munich (dpa) – Lufthansa is planning to increase its international capacity by up to ten million passengers a year by expanding Munich Airport.
The extension to Terminal 2, which is jointly operated by Lufthansa, is scheduled to open in 2035. This was announced by Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr at an event to celebrate the centenary of Germany’s largest airline. “Aviation is and remains a growth industry,” said Spohr, explaining the planned expansion. Spohr gave no details of how much would be invested.
According to the Lufthansa boss, Lufthansa’s joint venture with Munich Airport will be extended until 2056. After Frankfurt,Munich is Lufthansa’s second international hub. Two thirds of its passengers are in transit from other airports.
Unlike in Frankfurt, however, Lufthansa is the joint operator of Munich’s Terminal 2. This gives the company greater scope to plan and run the airport as it sees fit. Lufthansa’s subsidiary and partner airlines also take off and land at Terminal 2.
