Aug. 5, 2026: When Barbadian-born billionaire and singer Rihanna returned to Barbados’ Crop Over festival this week for the first time since 2024, she danced through the streets in a crystal-covered turquoise, pink, and orange masquerade costume with a towering jeweled headpiece. The Internet did what it always does when Rihanna appears at Crop Over: lost its mind. But behind the viral moment is a Barbados-based designer whose own story is as compelling as the costumes themselves.
Lauren Austin, the Trinidad-born, self-taught designer and mom-preneur who has created Rihanna’s Crop Over looks since 2013, was also behind dancehall star Spice’s costume this year, cementing her reputation as one of the region’s go-to designers for Carnival’s biggest names. Rihanna paraded through Grand Kadooment Day with her brother Rorrey Fenty’s band, Aura, wearing a piece from Aura’s “Watch the Throne” collection, a cutout bodysuit embellished with multicolor gemstones, tassels, and an oversized feathered bustle in turquoise, pink and orange.
A designer who built her own path

Austin’s story began far from the runway. Self-taught and originally from St. Joseph, Trinidad, she moved to Barbados in 2010 after marrying a Barbadian cricketer, launching her business from scratch in a market with few professional makeup artists at the time. “I had known from very young what I wanted to accomplish, and every moment of my life since then has been dedicated to making that accomplishment a reality,” she has said of her path into design.
Before Carnival costumes, Austin worked in hair, makeup, and nails, took courses at Sacha Cosmetics, and later returned to Trinidad for advanced training in professional makeup artistry. Her client list has since grown to include Rihanna, Miguel, and Beenie Man, and her design work has extended into music videos for artists like Shazelle and Sarah Marks.

Opening Gala and Ceremonial Last Canes
The festival officially begins with the Opening Gala and Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes, a tradition rooted in Barbados’ sugar industry. During the ceremony, the island honors the season’s most productive male and female cane cutters by crowning the King and Queen of the Festival, paying tribute to the workers whose labor helped shape the nation’s history.
Bridgetown Market
One of Crop Over’s favorite attractions, Bridgetown Market, transforms the capital into a lively cultural marketplace filled with local artisans, handcrafted goods, delicious Bajan cuisine, refreshing drinks, live calypso and soca music, and nonstop entertainment.
Cohobblopot

Kiddies Kadooment
