A proposed rezoning request that would’ve paved the way for a mobile home park was rejected during a recent Cleveland County Board of Commissioners meeting.
James Camp, who owns more than 6 acres of property on Range Road near Kings Mountain, made the request.
Camp wanted to change the property from residential to residential manufactured homes and parks.
Cleveland County Planning Director Chris Martin spoke to commissioners about the request during the monthly meeting Tuesday.
Martin said the property is mainly surrounded by single-family neighborhoods including a subdivision across the street.
He said that before 2010, there was a mobile home park on the property which included about 10 to 12 sites. Only one is currently on the property, but some of those septic systems are still on the grounds, Martin said.
Typically such requests come with a recommendation from the planning board. During its most recent meeting, the planning board, with only three out of seven board members present, could not vote because there wasn’t a quorum.
Martin did say that while two members thought the request was not in harmony with surrounding properties, another thought since it had previously been a mobile home park, it was acceptable.
Angela Lienweber spoke during the public hearing.
She said she grew up in the house across the street from the proposed mobile home park and later bought it from her family. She remembered when the property was previously a mobile home park and said it brought unwelcome company.
“It was a problem. I had people on my property,” Lienweber said.
Another neighbor, Charlie Sipes, said he too was concerned about what impact a mobile home park could have on the community and in particular on property values.
“I can see this turning into something bad for the community that is there,” Sipes said at the meeting.
The rezoning request was unanimously voted down with Councilman Johnny Hutchins absent from the meeting.
