Nigeria’s U17 Flamingos Set for Crucial Match Against Mexico in FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s U17 women’s team, the Flamingos, is all set to take on Mexico in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, currently being held in Morocco. The match is scheduled for today, presenting a critical opportunity for the Flamingos to advance to the quarter-finals.
The kickoff is slated for 3 PM local time in Morocco, which corresponds to 4 PM in Nigeria.
A Historic Rivalry Revisited
This upcoming encounter serves as a reminder of the previous showdown between the two teams during the group stage of the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. On March 23, 2014, the Flamingos secured a dominant 3-0 victory against Mexico, thanks to goals from Rasheedat Ajibade, Uchenna Kanu, and Aminat Yakubu.
All three players have since graduated to the senior national team, establishing themselves as pivotal members of the Super Falcons.
Focus on Knockout Football
At the final training session held on Wednesday, Head Coach Hakeem Busari emphasized the importance of shifting focus from their earlier group stage victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions Korea DPR. He urged his team to prepare their mindset for the heightened intensity characteristic of knockout-stage matches.
Busari has a full squad of 21 players to choose from. Key players likely to start include the in-form goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho and defenders Azeezat Oduntan, Ohunene Sunday, Esther Stephen, and Kanyinsola Rodiat Yusuf.
Favour Nkwocha and Tosin Rafiu, who recently played for the Falconets at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, are likely candidates for midfield roles, while Oluebube Umejiaku and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, both of whom have scored twice in the tournament, may lead the attack. However, Precious Oscar and captain Harmony Chidi could also be in contention for starting positions after being rested in the previous match.
Support from the NFF
In a show of support, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, the Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), visited the Flamingos during their training session in Rabat. He encouraged the players to build on their win over Korea DPR and to remain mentally prepared for the challenges that lie ahead in the knockout stage of the tournament.
Ikpeme emphasized the importance of concentration and determination as the team aims to continue advancing in the World Cup.
