The New York Knicks reached the Eastern Conference semifinals before injuries took too much of a toll in their series against the Indiana Pacers. With the Boston Celtics being crowned NBA champions and being the clear-cut best team in the NBA, the Knicks, like many other organizations, must evaluate what moves to make to compete.
Not every move is made in the offseason, however. The Knicks worked ahead during the season by acquiring OG Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors in a blockbuster trade on December 30. The Knicks produced an impressive 26-5 record when Anunoby was in the lineup, but as someone who has struggled with durability, there are some factors to consider.
The trade for Anunoby was made with the need to solve for free agency after the season ended given he has a $19.9 million player option for 2024-25 that he will surely decline due to his earning potential to far exceed that figure.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Anunoby is expected to remain with the Knicks. However, there are some indications he intends to evaluate his options in free agency after hearing what the team is offering for a contract.
“Let’s keep an eye on that,” Windhorst said on Monday. “Most people believe Anunoby will stay with New York, but there have been indications he may want to test the market, because he’s not thrilled with what the Knicks are offering.”
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: OG Anunoby, New York Knicks Updates
Anunoby averaged 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 23 games played with the Knicks during the regular season. While those numbers may not jump off the page, he elevated their defense to new heights while serving as a complementary option offensively.
Anunoby left Klutch Sports and signed with CAA last June. His agents are Drew Morrison, Austin Brown, and Sam Rose. Sam is the son of Leon Rose, the head of the Knicks’ front office.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: OG Anunoby, New York Knicks Updates
There would be a significant level of interest in Anunoby around the NBA if he becomes a legitimately viable option for other teams to acquire. His on-ball defensive impact and general skill set on that end make him a valuable player that could fit any team.
The Knicks have other matters to tend to this offseason, including the future of Isaiah Hartenstein, who is also set to reach free agency. New York must determine the best path forward as the organization builds around Jalen Brunson.
