Innovative AI Assistant Transforms Small Business Operations
Columbus, Ohio — During a routine drive to a doctor’s appointment, April Polk received an unexpected boost in her entrepreneurial endeavors. Her assistant alerted her to a vital grant application, a funding opportunity that could prove crucial for her small business, JaeLuxe Shoetique.
“She offered to complete the application while I was on the road,” Polk explained, referring to her AI assistant, named Chase. “I would have never managed that without her help.” Chase, a creation of Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, was released to the public on September 8 and targeted specifically at small businesses on September 29.
Meet the Innovators
Nearly 600 miles away in Malvern, Iowa, Tom Mulholland, who operates a local grocery store, uses a similar AI assistant named Wally, a name suggested by the AI itself. Mulholland, 66, expressed bewilderment over the choice but has embraced the technology to streamline his operations.
Despite their different fields—Polk is a women’s fashion entrepreneur while Mulholland specializes in groceries—both face a common challenge: the overwhelming responsibilities of running a small business, as noted by Meta during the product’s launch.
AI in the Spotlight
The introduction of Muse for Small Business comes at a time when public sentiment towards AI is increasingly skeptical. A Pew Research Center survey from June revealed that 52% of respondents felt more concerned than excited about the role of AI in daily life, a significant rise from 37% in 2021. A CNN poll from September found that 75% of participants viewed AI with fear and concern rather than hope.
Back to Business
Polk and Mulholland, however, focus on the practical advantages of leveraging AI technology. For them, Muse is not a revolutionary concept but a practical tool that frees up crucial hours that would otherwise be consumed by administrative tasks. “I have reclaimed time on tasks that used to dominate my day,” Polk stated, noting she was able to focus on more strategic aspects of her business.
A New Business Journey
Polk, a Chicago native, established JaeLuxe, a brand that caters to trendsetting women, while pregnant with her first daughter. Her entrepreneurial journey has involved challenges, including the closure of her retail outlet after the birth of her second child. Seeking help from external marketing agencies led to unsatisfactory outcomes, prompting her to adopt Muse.
“With Muse, I uploaded my brand guidelines, and the AI provided a comprehensive analysis of my social media presence, which proved to be invaluable,” she explained. It also addressed her email automation issues and optimized her website, greatly enhancing her operational efficiency.
Resilience Through Adversity
Mulholland’s grocery store has seen its fair share of challenges, including a devastating fire in 2021 that forced the business to close for three years. Despite the setbacks, he managed to reestablish the store, leveraging an impressive $750,000 to rebuild. “This was my retirement on the line,” he said, reflecting the community importance of his grocery store.
With limited competition and an aging customer base, MuHolland knows that time is a crucial resource. “I focus on what I do best—serving my customers,” he said, highlighting how Muse has allowed him to shift from administrative duties to enhanced customer service.
AI as a Partner
Muse’s capabilities extend beyond rudimentary tasks. It links to various platforms such as QuickBooks and Shopify, enabling business owners to manage everything from marketing campaigns to payroll more efficiently. Polk emphasized that the AI operates as a partner rather than a tool, allowing her to define the scope of its actions.
Future Outlook
As interest in Muse increases, it is essential for business owners to navigate the complexities of AI responsibly. Wayne Hankins, an analyst at Gartner, cautioned that while AI presents opportunities, ownership and control remain paramount to safeguarding sensitive business information.
The rapid adoption of Muse for Small Business highlights a shift in how entrepreneurs can manage operations—freeing time for more pressing tasks that directly contribute to growth. While not all may embrace the technology, Polk and Mulholland serve as prime examples of its potential, reclaiming hours in their day to focus on the core of their missions.
“These little victories add up,” Mulholland concluded, underscoring the subtle yet significant ways that technology has enhanced their business landscapes.
