Pilot plant for the production of “green iron” in operation

Lingen (dpa) – In Lingen in northwest Germany, a new plant for the climate-neutral production of iron has gone into operation. According to its operators, the pilot plant will use climate-neutrally generated hydrogen to obtain pig iron from iron ore, which can then be turned into steel. The plant in Lingen is also to serve as a test facility for a steelworks planned in Namibia. It is a joint project of the start-up CO2Grab/HyIron, the steel manufacturer Benteler and the energy company RWE. The German state of Lower Saxony is funding the project with three million euros, said Christian Meyer, environment minister of Lower Saxony.
