Poland Enters Period of National Mourning Following Deadly Shooting in Krakow
Poland has commenced two days of national mourning, beginning Sunday, after a tragic incident in Krakow’s Main Square. A 24-year-old man, identified as harboring far-right ideologies, drove into the bustling square and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuring fifteen others. The perpetrator was eventually confronted by police, who shot and wounded him during the exchange.
Described by Poland’s Defence Minister as an “act of terror,” the shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon in the heart of the Old Town, a prominent tourist destination in the country’s second-largest city. In the wake of the attack, mourners gathered in the square, lighting candles in remembrance of the victims as authorities continued their investigation, leaving portions of the area closed to the public.
Mary-Ange Collaer recounted her experience on social media, describing a harrowing escape with her family while vacationing in Krakow from Brussels. “We literally ran for our lives and managed to hide from the bullets flying around,” she expressed, remarking on their disbelief after witnessing the tragedy unfold. “We saw a few who did not make it, true horror,” she added.
Identities of the Victims Revealed
Among the six victims were four women and two men—three Polish nationals and one male from the U.K. Authorities confirmed that a woman from an unspecified foreign country was also among those who lost their lives. The regional governor of Malopolska, Krzysztof Jan Klęczar, noted that two police officers involved in neutralizing the attacker remained hospitalized; one is in a coma while the other has awakened from theirs. The police have appealed for blood donations to support the most critically injured officer.

Officials indicated that the swift actions of the two officers were instrumental in preventing a potential larger tragedy. Klęczar remarked, “Without their prompt and selfless intervention, the number of victims could have been significantly higher.” Among the injured, five non-Polish individuals represent a diverse cross-section, with victims from the U.K., Portugal, Russia, Germany, and Austria.
The suspect, who is in critical condition after multiple surgeries, had initially raised questions regarding his age, with authorities eventually confirming he is 24 years old. Prosecutors have launched investigations for murder and attempted murder, categorizing the incident as an act of terrorism.
Family Tragedy and Background of the Attacker
Authorities discovered three deceased bodies in the shooter’s family home located in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Krakow, identifying them as the attacker’s sister, mother, and father. Preliminary reports suggest that the family members succumbed to gunshot wounds.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński disclosed the shooter’s radical ultranationalistic beliefs, emphasizing indications of a deep-seated fascination with far-right ideologies. Videos circulated on social media depict chaotic scenes, showcasing panicked bystanders fleeing the square for safety and first responders attempting to revive victims. One video captures the moment a police officer fires repeatedly at the downed attacker.

Local officials revealed that the assailant’s family possessed numerous firearms, with authorities recovering a total of eleven weapons from their home. This alarming incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened interest in gun ownership in Poland amid escalating regional tensions.
Mass shootings in Poland are exceedingly rare. Recent attacks in schools across the central province of Mazovia, employing knives, highlight a trend of violence, culminating in a series of assaults occurring within just four days.
Kacper Rekawek, a researcher at the International Center for Counterterrorism, indicated that the shooter’s military attire and weaponry align with trends seen among “extreme-right lone actors” across Europe. “While there have been previous attempts, this incident marks a significant escalation in successful attacks within Poland,” Rekawek stated.
