Berlin (dpa) – The Federal Government aims to speed up the production, import and use of hydrogen as a climate-friendly energy source. To this end, it is looking to double its previous target of creating production capacity in Germany of 5 gigawatts by 2030 to at least 10 gigawatts. The government has decided to expand the 2020 National Hydrogen Strategy for this purpose.
Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Robert Habeck said that about one third of the hydrogen needed could be produced in Germany, while some two thirds would have to be imported. An import strategy is still being planned. Here the government wants to look closely at the social and ecological standards in the country of origin.
Hydrogen is seen as a building block for more climate-friendly economic activity since no greenhouse gases are emitted in the production process and it can replace fossil fuels such as gas or oil. However, large quantities of electricity are needed for so-called electrolysis, whereby water molecules are broken down into oxygen and hydrogen. According to the Federal Government, this electricity is to increasingly come from renewable sources. Germany is to become climate-neutral by 2045.
