The Sharks, a prominent South African rugby franchise, have recently undergone a significant management shake-up that has been described as “game-changing” by owner Marco Masotti, according to an article published on @rugby365com.
The changes involve the relocation of Chief Executive Officer Eduard Coetzee to MVM’s London office in July, as well as the appointment of new key personnel to drive the franchise forward.
Masotti’s Vision for the Sharks’ Future
Marco Masotti, the Durban-born-and-bred New York-based lawyer who spearheaded the international investment consortium MVM Holdings’ acquisition of a 51 percent majority stake in the Sharks back in January 2021, has been planning these management changes “for a while”.
In an interview with @rugby365com, Masotti expressed his confidence in the team he has assembled to oversee the Sharks’ operations.
“We have two grown-ups on the ground,” Masotti said, referring to Shaun Bryans, a Sharks board member and businessperson who works closely with him, and Vincent Mai, an American businessman and philanthropist who was born and grew up in South Africa.
Additionally, the Sharks have recently hired Mike Leslie as their new Chief Brand Officer, whose impact on the franchise’s social media presence has already been noticed and described as “game-changing” by Masotti.
The Search for a New CEO
With Eduard Coetzee’s relocation to London, the Sharks are now in the process of finding a suitable replacement for the CEO position. Masotti told @rugby365com that they are looking for “the right person, who shares our vision to be our next CEO”.
He expressed his preference for a “youngish, high-energy businessperson” who can take the business side of the franchise to the next level.
Coetzee’s New Role in Europe
Eduard Coetzee, the outgoing CEO, has been offered a new role within MVM’s structures, which he describes as a “massive opportunity” for himself and his family. From his London base, Coetzee will assist the Sharks with European sponsors while also working to strengthen the franchise’s relationship with Saracens, the English Premiership club in which MVM also has a significant interest. Coetzee is set to take up his new position on 1 August.
The Sharks’ Ownership Structure
The Sharks’ ownership structure consists of MVM Holdings, which holds a 51 percent majority stake, with the remaining 49 percent held by the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union and a Pay TV channel. The financial terms of the transaction, which took place in January 2021, remain confidential.
As the Sharks embark on this new chapter in their history, the management shake-up orchestrated by Marco Masotti and MVM Holdings appears to be a well-planned, game-changing move designed to position the franchise for success both on and off the field.
