When an NBA player has a promising rookie season, their team is happy. Who doesn’t like to get off to a good start?
At the same time, a quality rookie season can be a false promise. Sometimes, a player sets a certain standard as a rookie, and they spend the rest of their career failing to exceed it.
That’s especially likely to happen with older rookies. A teenager will probably struggle in their first NBA season – they’ll need time to adjust to the league.
By contrast, someone in their mid-20s may be more ready.
For example, Chris Duarte of the Indiana Pacers was 24 when he entered the league. He had a great rookie year, but he hasn’t made a ton of progress as a sophomore this season.
