At least three Ground Self-Defense Force members died and one other was seriously injured Tuesday after a tank exploded during training at the Hijudai maneuver area in Oita Prefecture, according to the GSDF.
The GSDF unit had been conducting target practice with a Type 10 tank when a shell exploded, resulting in the three deaths and one injury, the GSDF said.
The explosion occurred at around 8:40 a.m., with earlier media reports saying that two male GSDF members had died, while a female member had been rushed to the hospital via a medical helicopter.
The exercise area is used not only by the Self-Defense Forces, but also by the U.S. military.
