The new British leader knew he had some explaining to do after his predecessor stumbled through 7 weeks in office. Rishi Sunak faced one challenge after another during his first run on Wednesday through what is known as prime minister’s questions.
Opposition members in the House of Commons jumped on Sunak from the start over former leader Liz Truss’ failed plans to cut taxes. The head of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer, criticized the Conservatives for “crashing the economy.” He said there is a new Tory at the top, but as always, he is party first, country second.
Sunak said he will have to make “difficult” choices to restore economic stability and confidence. He promised that when times are difficult in the country, he will always protect the “most vulnerable.”
Sunak’s team was scheduled on Monday to lay out plans to fix what he has called Truss’ “mistakes.” However, he has delayed that announcement until mid-November.
Britons are struggling to keep up with the soaring prices of food and energy. They are demanding higher wages to cover the costs. Sunak says he needs more time to make the “right decisions.”
