Unity celebrations attract 300,000 in Hamburg

Hamburg (dpa) – After an opening public festival attended by hundreds of thousands of people on Monday, this year’s celebrations of the Day of German Unity are coming to a climax on Tuesday. A ceremony in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie to mark Germany’s national holiday will be addressed by the Mayor of Hamburg Peter Tschentscher and the President of the Federal Constitutional Court Stephan Harbarth. Around 1,300 guests are expected to intend, including the heads of state governments and all senior figures from the Federal Government. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was previously mayor of Hamburg, took part in a town hall meeting with members of the public on Monday.

The celebrations kicked off with a grand public festival on Monday. Over 300.000 visitors thronged the area around Hamburg’s City Hall and the Binnenalster lake. During the “Night of Unity” the crowds enjoyed a programme of live music, dance performances and exhibitions across several sites in the city centre until late into the night.
