Call for Release of Imprisoned Tunisian Journalist Zied el-Heni
New York — On Thursday, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) rallied alongside 16 additional civil society organizations, urging Tunisian authorities to promptly release journalist Zied el-Heni from imprisonment and to cease the ongoing judicial harassment he faces.
Critical Charges Against El-Heni
The coalition’s statement draws attention to three distinct legal cases against El-Heni, all stemming from his journalistic endeavors and critical commentary. Notably, he was sentenced to four years in prison, accompanied by an additional five years of police supervision following his release, after being convicted of four terrorism-related offenses on October 27.
Demands for Justice
The organizations are pressing for the annulment of El-Heni’s convictions, the dismissal of all outstanding charges related to his journalistic activities, and an end to the misuse of criminal and counterterrorism laws aimed at suppressing the press.
