Vehicle at level crossing causes train to derail in Waikato

Kiwirail says a freight train derailment south of Hamilton was caused by a vehicle driving through a level crossing at Waipa.

Part of State Highway 3 to Gillard Road in Waipa district is closed and my be closed possibly overnight after the collision.

No one was injured in the incident.

Kiwirail says a crane will be needed to remove the locomotive and wagons.

It says the track has also been damaged.

Other freight services are currently unable to travel south of Hamilton.
