Wednesday’s weather: Parts of SA warned to brace for damage caused by wind, hail and thunderstorms

Several weather warnings have been issued by the SA Weather Service.

The South African Weather Service issued warnings for severe thunderstorms and fires for some parts of the country, with clouds and morning fog forecast in other provinces.

Impacted-based warnings: 

A yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, with possible strong damaging winds and large amounts of small hail, resulting in localised damage to informal houses, can be expected over the central parts of the Free State and the north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Localised structural damage to homes and car ports can also be expected. 

Fire danger warnings:

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the northern parts of the Northern Cape, the western parts of both the North West and Free State, as well as the Joe Gqabi District Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

Weather outlook for tomorrow, 11 October 2023. Scattered to isolated showers and thundershowers are expected, except over the north eastern parts as well as the south western areas.

The weather in your province: 

Gauteng will be cloudy at first, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB sunburn index is high.

Morning fog is expected along Mpumalanga’s escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the north-east.

It will be cloudy in the western bushveld of Limpopo, with isolated showers and thundershowers, otherwise partly cloudy and warm conditions are expected. 

The North West can expect partly cloudy, windy and warm to hot conditions, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

It will be partly cloudy, windy and warm to hot in the Free State, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

Cloudy conditions, with fog patches, are expected along the Northern Cape’s coast in the morning, otherwise fine and cool.

It will be partly cloudy and warm to hot in the east, with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the north-east. 

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to north-westerly.

It will be cloudy, with fog patches, along the Western Cape’s west coast, the southern parts, as well as the extreme north-eastern parts in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm.

There will be isolated showers over the southern parts from the afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to north-westerly along the west coast, otherwise light to moderate easterly to south-easterly. 

The expected UVB sunburn index is very high.

Morning fog patches are expected in places over the western half of the Eastern Cape’s interior, otherwise fine and warm.

It will be cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and rain along the coast and adjacent interior. 

The wind along the coast will be light and variable, becoming light to moderate easterly in the afternoon.

The eastern half of the province can expect morning fog in places over the interior, otherwise it will be cloudy and cool, with isolated showers and rain along the coast and adjacent interior.

Fine, windy and warm conditions are expected in places over the interior from midday, where it will become partly cloudy in the north towards evening, with isolated thundershowers.

Morning fog can be expected over the interior of KwaZulu-Natal, otherwise cloudy and warm.

It will be hot in places in the north, with isolated showers and thundershowers expected by the afternoon. 

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, reaching near-gale between Richards Bay and Kosi Bay.

It will become moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly south of Durban in the afternoon, spreading to Richards Bay by the evening. 

The expected UVB sunburn index is very high.
