Malcolm Marx, the talented Springbok hooker, is on track to make a comeback from a long-term knee injury in time for South Africa’s opening Test of the year against Wales on 22 June at Twickenham.
Marx suffered a knee ligament injury during a training session in the pool stage of the World Cup last September and has been sidelined since then. According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, the 64-cap veteran is expected to recover fully and be available for selection for the crucial match against Wales.
Challenges Ahead for Marx and the Springboks
However, Marx’s return to the international stage comes with a catch. The hooker, who is currently contracted to Kubota Spears in Japan, will miss the remainder of the League One season due to his injury.
This means that Marx will not have played any competitive rugby leading up to the Test season, which could be a concern for the Springboks’ coaching staff. Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks’ director of rugby, faces a conundrum regarding Marx’s selection.
He must decide whether to risk playing Marx to ensure he is match-fit for the July series against Six Nations champions Ireland or turn to one of South Africa’s younger hookers.
The Springboks have several promising options, including André-Hugo Venter (Stormers), Marnus van der Merwe (Cheetahs), Johan Grobbelaar, and Jan-Hendrik Wessels (both Bulls), who were all involved in the first alignment camp of the year.
Fourie’s Injury and Its Impact on the Springboks
Another setback for the Springboks is the injury to veteran utility forward Deon Fourie. Fourie, who covered Marx’s injury during the World Cup and played 77 minutes in the final against New Zealand, is expected to miss the July series after suffering a knee injury while playing for the Stormers in the Champions Cup.
This leaves the Springboks with fewer experienced options in the forward pack.
Other Key Players Set to Return
Despite the challenges posed by injuries, the Springboks are expected to welcome back some key players for the upcoming Tests. Japan-based Kwagga Smith (tendon) and Faf de Klerk (knee) are both expected to recover in time to face Ireland in July.
Their presence will undoubtedly boost the Springboks’ chances of success against the formidable Irish side.
