In April 2022, Google opened its first African product development centre in Nairobi, Kenya to develop and build better products for Africans and the world.
TUKO.co.ke understands that the centre is Google’s second major research and development investment in Africa, after setting up an AI and research centre in Ghana in 2019.
On Wednesday, December 14, President William Ruto lauded Google for the move saying it would go a long way in solving difficult and technical challenges in the region and beyond.
“We commend Google for establishing a product development centre in Kenya that will coordinate its activities within Kenya and the Africa Region. This is an appreciation of the potential of the digital space and Kenya’s skilled human capital,” said Ruto.
Ruto currently attending the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington DC announced that he had agreed on areas of cooperation with Google Senior Vice President for Technology and Society James Manyika.
“The Government’s planned digitisation of its services will provide an area of collaboration with Google,” Ruto tweeted.
