Windsor father ‘overcome with happiness’ after $1-million lottery win

Windsor, Ont.’s Harold Worotny says he got the best birthday present ever picking up his Lotto 6/49 prize worth $1 million in the Gold Ball Draw.

But before he did that on Jan. 8, the father of one can credit needing some milk for finding out he’d won.

“It was late in the evening when I realized we were out of milk, so I decided to go for a walk to pick some up,” Worotny told OLG.

“While I was in line to pay, I kept thinking there was something else I needed to do. That’s when it hit me — I needed to check my tickets. “When I saw the prize amount, I couldn’t contain my excitement and shouted, ‘I can’t believe it! I just won a million dollars!’ I was completely overcome with happiness. Since it was late, I didn’t want to wake anyone up, so I called just a few people to share the incredible news. My friends and family were thrilled for me.”

Later on, he told OLG, it was a birthday wish come true.

“Today is my birthday, and I’m walking out of here with $1 million! This is by far the best birthday and retirement present I could have ever received. I wish everyone could feel this joy!”

Woronty plans to pay some bills and maybe buy a home.

The winning ticket was bought at I & A Variety on Howard Ave. in Windsor.

SECOND WIN IN WATERDOWN

Retiree Richard Lowe of Waterdown, Ont., won $250,000 after getting a top prize with Instant Cashingo and it turns out it’s the second time he’s won that amount.

In September of 2022, the father of one picked up $250,000 with Crossword Deluxe.

“I was at home when I played my Cashingo ticket and uncovered my prize” said Lowe to OLG. “I was pretty certain it was a winning ticket, but I still took it to the store to confirm. At first, it didn’t really sink in. It took some time for me to accept that I’d won again!”

Lowe is looking into investing and taking a vacation.

“I shared the incredible news with my family and friends, and they were all in disbelief,” he told OLG.  “Winning feels great! I think it will truly sink in once the cheque is in the bank.”

The winning ticket was bought at Fortinos on Hamilton St. N in Waterdown.

RETIREE WINS

Retiree Deborah Gosse of Burlington, Ont., matched the last six of seven Encore numbers in exact order in the Jan. 25 Lottario draw to win $100,000.

“I was at home when I used the OLG app to check my ticket,” Gosse told OLG. “When I saw what I’d won, all I could say was, ‘OMG!’ I called my husband over and asked him to take a look. There were so many zeros!”

She added: “I think my husband was more excited than I was. I was so happy, and he was in shock. It feels very nice to have finally won a big prize. I’ll take my time deciding what to do with my winnings.”

The winning ticket was bought at Shoppers Drug Mart on Headon Rd. in Burlington.
