As the weather starts to cool down, layering becomes key to staying warm. But not all layers are created equal.
Here are some of the best layering pieces for fall:
Fall sweater: Get ready for the sweater weather
A sweater is a perfect way to add an extra layer of warmth without sacrificing style. There are so many different types and styles of sweaters to choose from – from heavy knits with cute designs to soft merino wool pullovers.
Oversized sweaters in warm colors like burgundy, beige, taupe, brown, and deep ivory go really well against the fall landscape. They are also an easy pairing with fedora or black (warm) leggings. (The cardigan I am wearing is from Chicwish)
Cute designs in cardigans also make a nice style statement in a fall-related background.
Like this heart cardigan from Chicwish. It is heavy and oversized – perfect to keep you toasty and warm as you photoshoot outdoors.
Top tip: A chunky sweater over a collared shirt is a great way to stay warm and stylish at the same time.
A scarf:
Scarves are the perfect accessory for fall. They add color and texture to any outfit. It can also help keep you warm on those chilly days.
Once again with a scarf, colors are key. You can experience a bit with deep reds, browns, and plaids.
Plaids particularly look beautiful when paired with a monochrome sweater, top, or dress underneath.
A hat or a beanie:
A hat is a perfect way to top off any fall outfit. It will keep you warm and add a touch of style to your look.
For a fall hat or beanie, the right color palette is key. Deep browns, and black work well in hats and felt fedoras.
For berets, depending on the location red, maroon and even yellow/ivory can do wonders.
Like this photo in Paris in the fall, I am wearing a red beret. In the same season, a mustard yellow beret does well in Brugges.
Flowy dresses:
This is my favorite clothing to wear in a fall photoshoot. Fall dresses in neutral colors like beige, brown, taupe, white, or black are always in style and perfect for a fall photoshoot session.
Although the title says flowy dresses, straight or A-long style ones will also work well in a fall city type of scenario.
Here is a photo from Basel Switzerland where I am wrapped in a scarf, and wearing a figure-hugging deep maroon dress, and it blends well with the backdrop.
Flowy dresses in white, brown, or burnt orange go very well to create that dreamy travel inspirational pictures.
I recently wore this copper color dress from PerrinAndCo (on ETSY), and love how the colors came out.
When my husband and I did an engagement – family photo session, I wore a short white dress and it looked amazing against the colorful fall background.
Yellow surprisingly does very well in dresses too.
Here is another PerrinAndCo favorite, and it was shot in a Swiss village in the fall. This style of dress does very well in travel-related captures due to its long train.
Cape or a large blanket:
A cape or a large blanket scarf in earthy colors does wonders for a fall outfit.
You can be wearing an all-black outfit for a family photo session and just a nice cape will add some flair and an overall stylish vibe.
In this photo above, I am wearing a FENDI cape which is super warm and also looks lavish! You can buy similar styles from Amazon or other fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, or Burberry.

Capes and blanket scarves can be worn in the winter and early spring months as well – depending on where you live and traveling to.
An outerwear – jacket, trench coat:
As the weather gets cooler, a jacket becomes a necessary part of any outfit. It will keep you warm and help you look stylish.
A denim jacket is a great choice for a fall photoshoot.
With a denim jacket wear a fall-colored scarf to complete the photo shoot outfit.
Trench coats look amazing in olive green or beige color tones. This is particularly true if you are traveling to European countries as it instantly elevates your outfits. (They are water-repellent as well).
If you are hiking, photographing larches, or any other outdoor activities with the entire family, then wear lightweight waterproof puffer jackets.
You can wear colors like – red, brown, and yellow and they will surely pop against the fall landscape.
When posing for a family picture, make sure to coordinate your colors and outfit types. If you are aiming for a casual fall photoshoot, then ensure all the family outfits match.
For example, if it is the last camping trip for the season then all the subject/s must be wearing similar garment types; rather than a mix of business/formal and outdoorsy styles in one frame.

Denim is always in style, but it’s especially popular in the fall. I like to pair my skinny jeans with a nice oversized sweater or a wrap scarf.
Thermal leggings work the same way, and you can create a similar look with them (just like jeans). Just go with what you are most comfortable with.
If you are opting for straight-leg pants – choose a pair in a dark wash or a neutral color like black or khaki.
Boots and shoes:
Fall is the perfect time to break out your boots. Whether you choose ankle boots, knee-high boots, or even over-the-knee boots, they’ll add a touch of style to any outfit.
When you are out and about, like say, photographing a wooded forest or fall foliage in a national park it is important to have the right footwear so that you don’t hurt yourself.
My personal favorite is booties and leggings or jeans. Remember to wear no-show socks, aka loafer liners or invisible socks underneath.
When wearing flowy dresses, they won’t go with boots, so pack a pair of kitten heels to complete the fall outfit!

- Maple leaf headgear: Use this as a crown when creating dreamy photoshoots. They work well for couples or families. I personally like it for a mother-daughter family photoshoot outfit idea.
- Nail art: Nail art can speak volumes where you do not wish to show your pretty face, but want to curate that fall vibe through the location and an ‘unseen’ subject. They are also perfect when you are promoting products like hand creams, baked goods, or sipping a Pumpkin Spice Latte!

We live in Canada and it is super easy to find a local park, garden, or city where foliage can be easily captured. And for free!
Many stores and public institutions will also have fall decor, and they do welcome the public or shoppers for photos.
We also have pumpkin farms, corn mazes, and other fall-related places where we can venture out for a photoshoot.
If you live in a city without any fall season, then the best thing to do is to travel and get to a destination that does and conduct a shoot there. Nothing beats a natural setting.
