Two days before candidates at Memon Academy sat the 2022 Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) examination, six teachers were involved in an accident. Four died on the spot.
Two others including the head teacher Ms Zeinab Mohammed died 40 days later. Last Saturday, the only survivor Maurice Adede also died.
Yesterday, as parents and candidates trooped to the school to collect their KCSE results a cloud of sadness hung above the institution.

Two students, Rania Hussein and Hussein Bilal scored As of 83 and 82 respectively. Six other candidates had an A (minus). Out of the 112 who sat KCSE examinations, 80 got results that secure their entry to university.
Carolyn Mbugua, the school’s head of academics said they recorded a mean score of 7.68 points improving from last year’s 7.66 points.
“The accident claimed six teachers including the school principal Ms Zeinab Mohammed who died 40 days after the accident. It affected the students,” said Mbugua.
The Memon Education Board conducted counseling sessions for the students, teachers and parents. One of the six teachers, Maurice Adede died last Saturday.
Mbugua said the deaths may have affected the KCSE candidates who had been directly engaged with the accident victims.
The school had two sets of twins who excelled in the exams. One set of twins, Hussein Bilal and Hussein Abdulnaim scored A and A minus while the other set, Fatima and Zahra Kassim, scored B+.
“The teachers had prepared us well and the deaths came at a time when we needed them most,” said Abdulnaim.
