The town was a favourite among the colonial rulers of the past, possibly for its cool climes and proximity to all the tea estates! From stately British-styled bungalows and cottages to hotels serving up high tea, Nuwara Eliya was always associated with all things British in Sri Lanka.

If you’re thinking about making a trip, there are plenty of wonderful hotels to stay in both in the heart of the town or else amidst plush tea estates. Hotels such as the Heritance Tea Factory are a great choice for those who want to learn more about tea as well!
What Can I do?
Apart from drinking cups of freshly brewed tea, make sure you visit a tea factory to learn all about the production and manufacturing processes. There are also a lot of ponies and horses in the town so you can explore the streets just like they would have back under early British rule!
What Should I Pack?
Unlike the rest of Sri Lanka, it can get quite cold here! So, packing along a light jumper and a scarf will be a good idea. However, if you don’t have one you don’t have to worry since there’s always a good jumper on sale, all year round in this idyllic town!
