Sydney Swans’ Tom Papley Faces Drug Test Fallout
Sydney Swans forward Tom Papley has tested positive in a preliminary drug screening following a traffic stop by New South Wales Police, who claim he was driving with a suspended license.
According to police reports, a 30-year-old male, identified as Papley, was stopped at approximately 10:30 AM on Monday, November 2, during a routine random testing operation.
Authorities announced that the player allegedly tested positive for methylamphetamine during the roadside check.
The Sydney Swans released a statement confirming that Papley was pulled over for a license inspection. Following the traffic stop, he received a court attendance notice for allegedly driving with a suspended license, which resulted from an outstanding parking fine.
After this incident, Papley underwent a random drug test that showed a positive preliminary indication. A secondary sample has since been collected for further analysis.
Results from this second sample are expected to take at least four weeks to process.
The Swans indicated that Papley promptly notified the club about the incident, and the Australian Football League (AFL) has been informed as well.
Papley, recognized as one of the AFL’s elite small forwards, has played 216 matches for the Swans, solidifying his status as a key player for the team.
The Sydney Swans have experienced a tumultuous few months, highlighted by a scandal involving the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne last August.
In relation to the incident, vice-captain Isaac Heeney, along with teammates Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon, and Riley Bice, were sidelined from the final rounds of the season due to a “serious breach of expected club behaviour and standards,” as described by the club.
These suspensions were separate from an ongoing police inquiry concerning an alleged sexual assault at the Pullman Hotel, where no charges have been filed, and there is no implication of misconduct involving the players who have been suspended.
