Raiders Coach Reflects on Hudson Young’s Potential Departure
Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart expressed the organization’s commitment to retaining Hudson Young amidst speculation of a move to the Papua New Guinea Chiefs. Stuart emphasized that the club made significant efforts to ensure Young remained, reportedly “bending over backwards” to keep him.
Canberra Withdraws Major Offer
In a surprising turn, the Raiders retracted their substantial four-year, $4.4 million contract offer to the Blues star earlier this week. Young is currently in Port Moresby as he considers a lucrative offer estimated at $900,000 annually from the Chiefs, which comes with the added advantage of being tax-free.
Market Value and Salary Cap Insights
While Young stands to earn significantly more through the Chiefs, the National Rugby League (NRL) had previously assessed his market value at $1.1 million, which has since been adjusted to $1 million. ARLC chairman Peter V’landys stated that players have the option to contest their assigned market value, allowing for personal considerations such as family proximity.
Stuart Discusses Financial Realities
Stuart noted that the Raiders’ offer to Young was the largest in the club’s history, affirming that an increase was not viable. “We couldn’t have offered Hudson any more,” he stated on ABC Radio Canberra. “It would have been unfair on the club if we went any further.” He highlighted the delicate balance between supporting players and ensuring the club’s financial stability.
Young’s Career with the Raiders
Hudson Young has been a crucial player for the Raiders since his NRL debut in 2019, accumulating 155 games with the team. Despite the current situation, Stuart recognized Young’s right to explore new opportunities, especially in light of the expansion of rugby league in Papua New Guinea.
Coaching Perspective on Player Movement
Stuart acknowledged the driving force behind Young’s potential relocation. “Money, absolutely,” he confirmed, indicating that financial incentives were likely influencing Young’s decision. “If Hudson wants to make that decision and take those tax-free dollars, he has to consider the lifestyle change that comes with living in Papua New Guinea.”
Future Considerations
Speculation surrounds whether Young might seek an early release for the 2027 season since the Chiefs are not set to join the league until 2028. Stuart commented on the existing rules allowing players to sign with new clubs in advance as “messy,” expressing concern for fans who may see their favorite players departing.
An Emotional Response from the Coach
Despite acknowledging the business nature of the sport, Stuart confessed he takes player departures personally. “I do find it difficult at times. I’m not disgruntled with Hudson looking elsewhere, but we made him the highest offer in the club’s history. Now we must move forward,” he remarked.
