Former DFAT Australia China Scholar Andrew Phelan says PM Anthony Albanese is “erring on the side of caution” and will “take a wait and see approach” in the China negotiations against Australian trade bans.
“The Prime Minister going to Beijing is quite a big deal so he’s erring on the side of caution, he’s gonna take a wait and see approach,” Mr Phelan told Sky News Australia.
“We’ve had a few meetings so far they’ve been pleasant but they’re yet to bear fruit.
“The next step as part of that process is the trade ministers visit and I think his offer to drop cases at the WTO makes perfect sense.
“It’s in Australia’s interest that those cases don’t go ahead and that China drops the sanctions.”
