Xabi Alonso had several players worthy of recognition following Saturday’s significant victory over Manchester United.
While Morgan Rogers scored a pivotal goal and Mike Penders made a critical save, Alonso reserved his highest praise for Romeo Lavia. The young midfielder contributed significantly, completing all 90 minutes for Chelsea just days after doing so for the first time in a competitive match on Wednesday.
Alonso Praises Lavia’s Performance
Alonso noted, “He has done so many things right. He consistently linked the defence with the attacking players, effectively switched the game, and made numerous sound decisions. He was very dynamic and competitive.”
He added, “Not just in this game, but over the last two or three weeks, he has been performing at a high level, and I am genuinely delighted for him.”
Despite Lavia’s consistent display of fitness since the beginning of the season, he found himself out of Alonso’s regular first team once Jordan Henderson returned to fitness. The upcoming decision on team selection will be challenging; Lavia offers exceptional quality on the ball, while Alonso appreciates the leadership and intangible qualities that Henderson provides.
It will be intriguing to see how Alonso sets up the team for Sunday’s match.
