Berlin (dpa) – The Petersberg Climate Dialogue, which will lay important groundwork for the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 in December, has begun in Berlin. At the start of the conference, Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for wind and solar power to be expanded worldwide. Baerbock announced that she planned at the two-day meeting in Berlin to open a debate about whether a target for generating electricity from renewable energy sources could be achieved at the next UN Climate Change Conference.
Representatives of more than 40 countries have come to the German capital to attend the Climate Dialogue in preparation for the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai in December. The meeting is not the normal kind of conference at which the lowest common denominator is sought, emphasised Baerbock. “The Petersberg Climate Dialogue is a working conference which, above all, brings together those who really want to do something.”
On the event’s agenda are, among other things, the global energy transition and financial support for countries particularly badly affected by climate change. The United Arab Emirates, as the organiser of COP28 in December 2023, will be co-hosting the Climate Dialogue. The Petersberg Climate Dialogue has been held since 2010 and traditionally serves to prepare for the UN Climate Change Conferences.
