The human body goes through many changes with age, but for a woman, these experiences seem to be more amplified and for many women, even daunting.

Menopause is one of those important transitions all women must experience as well.

October 18 marks World Menopause Day (World Meno-Day), which raises awareness of menopause and champions women’s health and improved well-being. This year the theme is ‘Cognition and Mood’, referring to the hormonal changes women experience during menopause and perimenopause.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the changes experience during menopause “vary substantially from person to person”.

“Some have few if any symptoms. For others, symptoms can be severe and affect daily activities and quality of life. Some can experience symptoms for several years.”

Some of the symptoms associated with menopause are:

hot flushes and night sweats. Hot flushes refer to a sudden feeling of heat in the face, neck and chest, often accompanied by flushing of the skin, perspiration (sweating), palpitations, and acute feelings of physical discomfort which can last several minutes;changes in the regularity and flow of the menstrual cycle, culminating in cessation of menstruation;vaginal dryness, pain during sexual intercourse and incontinence;recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)muscle aches and joint painsdifficulty sleeping/insomnia;changes in mood, depression, and/or anxiety;poor memory and concentration, also called brain fog

The United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) recommends a healthy diet, exercise and mental health to help with menopausal symptoms.

“It can also help you keep as well as possible in the future.”
