The British government has blocked a law passed by the Scottish regional parliament that would make it easier for residents of the province to legally change their gender, Reuters and France Press reported, citing official sources.
Britain’s Secretary of State for Scotland, Alistair Jack, said it was the first time he had exercised his right to veto a Scottish law. The move sparked a fresh row between central government in London and the regional cabinet in Edinburgh.
The law, passed last month after heated debate, made Scotland the first British province to back a gender reassignment procedure based on self-determination, including by removing the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria and lowering the minimum age from 18 to 16.
We remind you that before Christmas, a bill was passed in the first reading in Spain, which allows a person to freely change their gender from the age of 16. This came after months of tension between the ruling left and the country’s feminist movement.
The bill envisages the possibility for a person who identifies as transgender to change their name and gender in their personal documents simply by visiting the competent administrative office. It is also envisaged that the requirements for adulthood, medical documents and evidence of completed two-year hormone therapy will be dropped.
