Alcaraz Claims Victory Over De Minaur in Vienna Open Final
In a thrilling encounter at the Vienna Open, Alex de Minaur showcased exceptional skill but ultimately fell short against his formidable rival, Carlos Alcaraz. The championship match, held on Sunday, marked their seventh head-to-head meeting, and Alcaraz secured a decisive 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Despite pushing Alcaraz to the limits with some impressive rallies, de Minaur was unable to break his winless streak against the young Spaniard. Following the match, de Minaur acknowledged Alcaraz’s talent with a compliment, stating, “It’s great to have you back on tour,” but playfully noted, “It is very annoying to play against you!”
De Minaur expressed satisfaction in his performance throughout the tournament, especially after defeating newly ranked world No. 1 Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. This victory marked de Minaur’s first win over Zverev in an individual competition, showcasing his significant improvement this season.
Upcoming Challenges for De Minaur
The Australian tennis star will now head to Paris for the Masters tournament, a crucial qualifying event for the ATP Finals. He currently holds the eighth and final spot for the year-end championship in Turin.
After reaching his third final of the year, de Minaur is poised to rise back to No. 8 in the ATP rankings. He reflected on his journey, stating, “I’m proud to be standing up here and still fighting,” while expressing excitement for the remainder of the season.
Alcaraz’s Impressive Performance
Alcaraz, now a four-time title holder this season, demonstrated his dominance by winning the tournament without dropping a single set. This victory is a significant milestone in his career, bringing his total title count to 28.
After recovering from wrist issues that had disrupted his season, Alcaraz appears to have returned to form reminiscent of the player who won the Australian Open in early 2026. He stormed out of the gates in the final, breaking de Minaur’s serve in the first game and quickly establishing a commanding 4-0 lead.
Although de Minaur only managed to secure a single game in the first set, he fought hard in the second, producing remarkable points to stay competitive. Ultimately, with the match on the line at 4-5 in the second set, Alcaraz displayed his exceptional skill, executing a brilliant final rally that showcased his prowess, sealing the match with a perfectly placed forehand along the baseline.
In his post-match remarks, Alcaraz recognized de Minaur’s efforts, stating, “He’s really fast, you have to earn every point. You might have a winner against everybody — except him.”
