China’s rotorcraft developments hint at potential future pathways

While the tiltrotor appears to be oriented toward the civilian market, military applications could be possible given its speed and endurance advantages. (via X)

Imagery of two new Chinese rotorcraft undergoing fight tests has surfaced over the past week. The pair of aircraft – a tiltrotor aircraft and a coaxial compound – represents competing rotary-wing design philosophies aimed at enhanced speed and performance when compared to traditional helicopters.

The official designations of both aircraft are unknown. However, indications are that the tiltrotor was developed by Hafei Aviation Industry (a subsidiary of Harbin Aircraft Industry Group), while the compound coaxial is by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group. Both companies operate under the umbrella of the conglomerate Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

The tiltrotor looks similar to Leonardo’s AW609, but it features a T-tail configuration and incorporates forward-pivoting engine nacelles, similar to those of the Bell V-280 Valor. It is thought that this design decreases complexity, vis-à-vis entire rotating nacelles like those on the V-22 Osprey.

While the tiltrotor appears to be oriented toward the civilian market, military applications cannot be discounted given its speed and endurance advantages.

It is also worth noting that there have been other Chinese tiltrotor projects, such as the uncrewed UR6000 tiltrotor developed by United Aircraft and unveiled in late 2024 as an autonomous civilian-operated platform capable of ferrying passengers and cargo.

The Chinese coaxial compound helicopter bears more than a passing resemblance to the Sikorsky S-97 Raider. (via X)

The coaxial compound helicopter, on the other hand, bears more than a passing resemblance to the Sikorsky S-97 Raider, particularly in its size, fuselage design, four-blade coaxial rotor system and rear-mounted pusher propeller.

It is noteworthy that China is keen on studying the coaxial compound concept, considering that the S-97 was not chosen for the US Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) programme.

Sikorsky’s Raider X, another coaxial compound helicopter pitched for the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) programme, went nowhere and the project was ultimately cancelled last year.

Chinese military aviation expert Andreas Rupprecht told Asian Military Review, “It’s almost certain both aircraft are technology demonstrators and are built to explore the technology for future civil and military applications”.

He added that while the developments themselves are not surprising – given the number of patents and academic research papers on such rotorcraft in China – the advanced stage of the projects, with prototypes already being tested, was unexpected.

The higher speed and greater endurance – the latter more so for the tiltrotor design – of such aircraft compared to current helicopters would allow China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to move personnel and cargo more rapidly and over greater distances, enhancing its operational reach and response times.

Much like the FLRAA programme, it is possible that the PLA could study both design concepts and ultimately choose one for its next-generation rotorcraft. Alternatively, both designs could eventually be adopted to fulfil different roles, each leveraged for its unique flight characteristics and operational advantages.

Rupprecht added that the future of these rotorcraft configurations in China, either within the PLA or among civilian operators, will depend on the success of the ongoing trials, the maturity and reliability of the technology, and their operational relevance to evolving requirements.
